On Nazis and MAGA

For a while now many have been comparing contemporary American politics to the Nazis. While it is wise to understand warnings from history, it's also important to keep in mind what has changed. Sure, you can make some basic generalizations about broad strategies like scapegoating, demonization of the media and loss of due process. Those are all certainly important things to keep in mind as we move forward. Nonetheless, I think it's also important to understand what's different now.  Let's consider three things that are not the same: population and demographics, instant mass communication and 200 years of democratic government. There are probably more and this is to get the discussion going on how history will not repeat itself.

In the early 1930s, Germany's population was around 67 million. Most were Germans along with a handful of minority groups. The culture was very homogeneous. That's very different from the US population of the 2020s. We are a nation of around 340 million. While the main language used here is English, there are hundreds of other languages spoken here from all over the world. There are a wide variety of different cultures here in the US: Amish, Mormons, Latino, Cajun  along with dozens of immigrant communities. This only scratches the surface. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant, we are a very diverse nation. Now let's add a new layer, modern mass communication.

The days of newspapers, theater newsreels and radio news are all but gone. We now have the double-edged sword of instant mass media  where anyone with a cell phone can broadcast events as they are happening. The state no longer has a monopoly on the narrative. And let's not forget ubiquitous surveillance cameras almost everywhere now. That makes it harder to hide things. Yes, we do have a mass media that has consolidated around five large corporations but let's not forget the numerous independent people and organizations reporting and commenting on news. While it is not impossible for lies to pass as truth, I think it is much more difficult now. That's why it's a good idea to not take a so-called breaking story as the truth. Be patient and check back in a day or two to get a better feel for what really happened. But that's a discussion for another time. Overturning 200 plus years of democratic government is a tall order for a four year presidential term.

The Office of the President does not have that kind of power. He or she cannot simply dissolve the legislative branch and the judicial branch. So-called executive orders are not writs of a king and can be challenged and overturned. Elections are not run by the federal government but rather the States. Gerrymandering can only get you so far and as we are now seeing can be countered by the opposing party. Texas and California are redrawing their election maps in a bid to see who controls the US House come 2026. When the Republicans lose, they will of course jump up and down crying election fraud! Unless they have actual evidence, the courts will not play along. Trump and his sad band of ghouls are becoming more and more unpopular by the day. Elections still matter, at least for now.

There are other differences as well such as Germany having to pay massive war reparations and suffering from hyperinflation. That said, the warning from history should not go unheaded. Democracies indeed can become authoritarian. The current regime is doing catastrophic damage to the US and it will take years if not decades to undo. Take heart in the mass protests we are seeing all across the country almost every weekend.  Remember, democracy dies only if we choose to let it.

Monthly Subscriptions and Other Ripoffs

The greedy by design corporations are no longer content with a one and done sale. They are always on the hunt to find new ways into our pockets. Remember these cats are legally bound to maximize profits above any other consideration. A clean environment is cool and all unless it interferes with their bottom line. Can no longer drink your water? We can sell you some! So no worries, our profits are up! Our workers can no longer afford to eat well or see a doctor, that's a sacrifice we are willing to make in the name of profit. Greed is literally built into our system. Most likely, it will get worse before it gets better. More and more things are becoming a subscription. Quality is being sacrificed on the altar of prophets. I'll share a cautionary tale. What does the future hold? A new path into our pockets has been carved, subscriptions.

Subscriptions are not a new idea. There have been newspaper and magazine subscriptions going back many many decades. There are subscriptions to almost everything now, store subscriptions, TV packages, NFL football games, our smartphones and of course internet access are all available for a low low monthly fee.  Insurance premiums for health, home and auto all work on a similar plan,  maybe just spread out a little more. Friends, you know it's getting bad when you have to subscribe for features in the new car you just bought. Do you really want to use those heated and cooled seats? You can for a low monthly fee. How about navigation and roadside assistance? Don't worry, the fees can be bundled into your car payment for your convenience. Now there are even apps that track your subscriptions and let you know if you are not using them. Why do I have a sinking feeling that it's another subscription? But wait! The rip offs are not done yet.

The idea of a product lasting several decades or more is over. Let's find the lowest amount of time possible between buying a new product and its replacement. $38,000 for a new car? I think that's the average price here in mid 2025. Let's make it last about 3 years. 10 or 15 years is just too long to wait for another sale. Hey, the banks make money and the car companies make money while you get more and more debt! What good is a warranty if the product is terrible to begin with by Design?

I know a full-time wheelchair user who has to have a gel cushion to prevent bed sore-like abrasions forming.  He told me they used to last around a decade or so before needing to be replaced because of leaking. Fortunately for him, they had a lifetime warranty. So around every 10 years he would get a new one. This is no longer the case. Now, he's lucky if they last a year. Sure, they still have the same lifetime warranty but that's little comfort while the wheelchair user is stuck waiting for a replacement. Moving more cushions is more important. I'm sure somehow or other, these guys are getting paid to move more. I could go on and on about cars that are always in the shop (under warranty) are also a headache. I'm sure you can think of numerous other products that are not what they used to be. No, I don't want to return to the past. I just think quality is not too big of an ask.

This short-term bottom line thinking is not a long-term solution to anything. Long ago, we mastered the art of building clothes washers, refrigerators, cars and numerous other products that would last. Making everything disposable it's not only bad for the  environment, it is also bad for the economy in the long run. The debt bubble will burst and as usual the poor will be the ones holding the bag. Who we vote for matters not only in politics but also with our dollars. Take some time and do your homework.

President Nothing-Burger

“I can end the war in 24 hours,” candidate 47 boasted. He ran his mouth about a lot of other things as well. Promising a recession if we dared to elect the Democrats, he was the only one who could fix the economy and a lot of bile  about immigrants, especially those who were black and brown, were all ran into the ground in his so-called rallies. Thus far, this has been a presidency of fluff (and make no mistake a lot of real harm). There are three lessons the President could learn but he refuses to do so  because they clash with his fragile ego. The President cannot run the country via executive orders. Other people around the world really don't give a shit about the United States. The natural world crushes the profit motive. Let's take a closer look.

Having an AI poorly write far right executive orders that clearly deify the Constitution is proving to be a non-winning strategy. Thus far, around 90% of them have been struck down by the courts. 47 knows he can't get these insane changes to our laws through Congress. So he tries to sneak them in via executive order. No more Birthright citizenship? It may sound great to non-thinking red meat loving right wingers. The practical effect is creating another stateless population with no rights and no place to go. That's a no win for anyone and why it too was shot down in court. It turns out America first is becoming America alone.

Rather than strengthen our economy, 47’s unprovoked trade wars  only hurt US consumers and businesses. The days of the factory powered economy are long gone and will not come back. Yes, the offshoring of these jobs accelerated change. We cannot forget most of these jobs are now replaced by automation. Nor can we forget, any of these factories have been closed for decades and would take a lot of time, capital and work to reopen. We cannot just walk in, throw on the lights and restart the machines. If we really want to get into the business of manufacturing goods like we used to, that will take a lot of planning and time. It's not magic. The magical idea we are not causing climate change is worse than wishful thinking, it is downright harmful.

47, and his rich buddies in the fossil fuel industry are allowing their wallets to dictate what they will and will not believe. Climate change does not care about belief. It is no longer some theory about what may or may not happen in the future. Climate change is here now in the form of stronger storms, more extreme temperatures and catastrophic fires. Shifting regions for  growing crops, areas becoming too hot to live and a changing hydrocycle will spark more and more conflicts and destabilize the world as we know it. No, the world will not bend to an aging man who's losing his mind more and more each day.

Instead of solutions, we get hot air and complaints of his personal victimhood. In short, we have a Nothing Burger in the White House whose only intention is to tear down what others have built. I don't think being a tool of the super wealthy or defender of despots and pedophiles will lead to any long-term success. The real question is how can the rest of us mitigate the damage?

The Slow and Inevitable Collapse of Trump World

Can you feel it? This Administration is falling apart. All they have left are mostly hollow threats, empty bluster and never ending victimhood whining. A strong leader could care less about what comedians or cartoon shows say about them. Hopefully, they have more important things to deal with but not this crew! “Take that off the air or I'll sue!” Nobody can  make fun of me! This Administration is devoid of Any leadership skills whatsoever. The walls are closing inevitably and relentlessly. I'm not sure what this will look like going forward. But I can assure you it won't be pretty. Let's examine tariff chicken and TACO Trump, the ongoing ICE fiasco and possibly the final nail in the MAGA coffin, the Epstein saga.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist or an economist to understand tariffs are bad for the economy. What makes it even worse is the on again and off again nature based apparently on the president's mood. In order to thrive business needs stability. They need to know the rules will not suddenly change based on an autocrat’s mood. If you know even the slightest about business, you understand they pass expenses on to customers. They are simply not going to take losses out of a sense of patriotism. And I call bullshit but all of these so-called “trade deals.” Real trade deals between something as large and complicated as two nation states take months or even years to hammer out. Trade agreements are much more than social media posts. Several hundred changes in a few months only inject instability into the system. Sooner or later the bill will come due. Ripping people off the street by goons wearing masks without due process is much more than just a bad look.

What's going to happen when the people who work our farms stop showing up? The best case may be price spikes along with some going hungry. With the people who do our building afraid to show up to work (along with tariffs on materials) will pretty much kill construction efforts.  I never thought I would see the day in the United States where police wear masks and send people off to literal concentration camps. Please understand what can happen to our most vulnerable, can happen to any of us. Also be assured they will not stop with illegal black and brown people. Authoritarians must always have enemies! Where are you on their list? Where are your family and friends on that list? Consider it carefully and here's one more thing.

The Epstein nightmare is an albatross that will hang around Trump's neck until he is in the grave. No amount of Obama bashing or digging up dirt on Hillary will make this go away. Jingling shiny keys will no longer work. Sooner or later there will be investigations and much of the truth will come out. Sadly, I don't think this means justice for the victims. Our imperfect system simply will not allow for any Elite to face consequences. This scandal will further shred the Republican Party and maybe even the Democrats before it's over. There's no amount of distraction or whining that can make this story "go away."

Trump says a lot of things. That's a far cry from what actually happens. So called “executive orders” get shot down on the courts. “Trade Agreements” are in actuality nothing more than a social media post. Lawsuit after lawsuit gets dismissed. Given Trump's obvious and rapid mental decline, things will only get worse. I have a bad feeling the infighting and power struggles within the White House are off the charts! So much for consistency and stability.

Reality Does Not Care About Your Feelings

Passing laws against the words climate change will not stop climate change. Passing laws against climate science, climate reports and sea level rise will not stop climate change. Asking other countries to repeal rules for e environmental protections will also not stop climate change. All the money, profits and wishful thinking does not change what is happening to our atmosphere. Climate Change is not something you believe in, it's rather something you understand. You may (or may not) believe in God but you understand gravity. Powerful elites and the politicians they buy want to deny reality. (Still, you have to wonder why some are building doomsday bunkers.) The longer we put off addressing climate change, the worse it will be. The consequences of climate change are already happening.

How many superstorms, tornadoes, fires and droughts will it take for people to accept the reality of human caused climate change? I can give you a hint, for some it is directly related to their wallet. The status quo is a way to maximize profits. The greedy are perfectly willing to wreck the environment for future generations to get maximum short-term profits. Exxon was one of the first organizations to understand climate change and its implications. Dependent on large donor politicians cannot see beyond the next election cycle and are also willing to sacrifice the future. This is another reason money in politics is so dangerous. Money must be a hell of a drug for some! Then there is the “it doesn't affect me” crowd.

So what if there are record floods several states away or in another country? There are no fires where I am! Droughts always come and go. Summers are supposed to be hot! For this crew, who are being told everything is fine and nothing should change, it is easy to downplay or ignore climate disasters going on all around us. They tend to consume more propaganda than actual news. They let the money crowd listed above tell them what to think. Yet, there's even a worse bunch, the Greenwashers.

The Greenwashers are companies and organizations that pretend to care about climate change for the sake of profit. It is more important to look good than do things that address the issue. Car companies, restaurant chains, energy companies and even fashion companies have all jumped on the greenwashing bandwagon. Sure, getting rid of a few plastic straws, having a few electric car options and making tiny investments in green energy tech for self-promotion will fix everything! Their idea of sustainability only goes as far as this quarter's bottom line. Rather than commit to real change, they blame individuals. Hey, it's up to you to recycle, drive less and plant more trees while they effectively do nothing.

Yes, we all have a part to play. Our individual efforts are only a drop in the ocean when compared to what large corporations can and should do. It will never be too late to take climate change seriously. But the longer we wait, the more costly it will be. Here in the US, some states are trying to do their part. While others are going backwards. Getting anything done collectively at the national level seems like a lost cause for the next four years. Currently, there is no way to calculate the suffering, damage and loss of life the loss of these four years will impose.
